Apple Brown Betty
- Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Prepare the Dish:
- Grease a 1-1/2 quart souffle dish with butter.
- Layer the Bread:
- Start by placing a layer of cubed bread in the bottom of the prepared dish.
- Mix the Apples:
- In a separate bowl, combine the cubed apples, sugar, and your chosen spices (such as cinnamon and nutmeg) until well mixed.
- Add the Apples:
- Cover the layer of bread with a layer of the apple mixture.
- Add Butter and Citrus:
- Dot the apples with small pieces of butter.
- Drizzle a little lemon juice over the apples and sprinkle with lemon rind.
- Repeat Layers:
- Continue layering with bread and apple mixtures, ending with a final layer of cubed bread on top. The dish should be heaped nicely.
- Bake the Pudding:
- Cover the souffle dish with a lid or aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
- Uncover and Finish Baking:
- After 30 minutes, uncover the dish and continue baking for an additional 30 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown.
- Serve:
